Previously: Tarmo was Odin once, then lost his ravens. The writer has named every god he’s worn except one.
前情提要: 塔尔莫曾是奥丁,后来失去了他的渡鸦。作家点出了他身上的每一位神,唯独漏了一位。
She said Odin.
She didn’t say Ra.
Born From an Egg
The oldest stories keep putting the sun inside an egg. In the Finnish Kalevala, a duck lays her eggs on the knee of Ilmatar, the air spirit floating on the sea. The eggs break, and the yolk becomes the sun. In China, 盘古开天: Pangu sleeps inside a cosmic egg for eighteen thousand years, then breaks it open and pushes heaven away from earth. In Egypt, the sun hatches on the first mound to rise out of the dark waters.
Tarmo’s egg was laid at the bottom of Baikal, the deepest lake on earth.
The Serpent That Swallows the Sun
Every night, the Egyptians said, the sun god Ra sails through the underworld, and every night the serpent Apep tries to swallow him. In this story the serpent succeeded. The python god swallowed Tarmo whole and laid him again. Nobody wrote that.

Tarmo remains beside the fire after the Writer leaves. He turns her chosen name over in his mind.
She remembers the man she wrote. The ravens. The missing eye. The love story.
But something happened while she was elsewhere.
He came back through the ice with the sun in him.
Now the frost melts in his hair, and the woman who believes she knows him has either failed to notice or decided to deal with it later.
He is not sure which irritates him more.
This is Tarmo’s answer to her private certainty: there are experiences she did not give him, changes she did not oversee, and a self that does not require her permission.
He may attend Christmas dinner.
That does not mean she has written him tame.
The Part She Didn’t Write
In a city of snow, the frost in his hair has gone to water. He’s the warmest thing for a kilometre. Upstairs a pen is moving, and he can feel it on him like a hand on a dog’s neck.
“Let her. The part of me she didn’t write doesn’t read.”
